Avular strengthens position with new investment

Avular secures new investment to accelerate growth and innovation

Avular, the Eindhoven-based mobile robotics pioneer and spin-off from Eindhoven University of Technology, has secured additional funding from its existing investor Lumipol. This investment will support the company’s next phase of growth as the team expands and develops its product portfolio. Avular now has a team of 50 talented professionals driving innovation in mobile robotics.

The investment

Lumipol’s renewed investment reflects confidence in both Avular’s team and its long-term vision. “We truly believe in this team, and they have proven themselves over the past years,” says Tom Krieckaert, CEO of Lumipol. “That remains one of the most important reasons for us to invest—having a great idea is nothing without a top team to execute it. We also see significant opportunities for cross-pollination with other companies in the Lumipol group. Mobile robotics is a booming market, and we share the vision that it can help solve some of the world’s most complex challenges.”

Looking to the Horizon

Avular aims to become a top-10 global player in mobile robotics within the next ten years. The company is starting its journey locally, engaging with partners in the Brainport region to establish a consortium for mobile robotics development. While the region is known for high-tech systems and advanced control engineering, a central hub for collaboration, testing, and demonstration of mobile robots has not yet existed. Avular intends to take a leading role in creating such a hub in Eindhoven, before scaling globally.

A Strategic Step Forward

Yuri Steinbuch, CBO at Avular, sees the continued partnership with Lumipol as a logical step: “In 2018, we received our first investment from Lumipol with a four-person team. Today, we are over 50 employees strong and have built a solid product portfolio. The collaboration with Lumipol has grown alongside us, and we are excited to continue this journey together.”

Over the past year, the team has focused on defining and developing new products. In December 2021, Avular launched The Autopilots, a modular platform that allows entrepreneurs and engineers to accelerate their mobile robotics development. At the same time, the team continues to enhance Avular’s other robotic platforms through both client projects and in-house R&D.

Leadership Updates

In July 2021, Avular welcomed Koen Evers as a new board member. With his experience in technical and commercial leadership roles at Vanderlande, Koen now works alongside Albert Maas and Yuri Steinbuch to guide Avular toward becoming a global player. Meanwhile, Joop aan den Toorn stepped down from the board to focus fully on technical development within the company.

“Joop’s decision to focus on what he loves most was a major change for our board, but the addition of Koen immediately strengthened our strategic expertise,” says Albert Maas, CEO and co-founder of Avular. “Together, Koen’s experience in strategy and structure and Joop’s technical contributions put us at the start of an even more successful journey.”

What’s next

With new investment, ongoing product development, and strengthened leadership, Avular is poised for its next phase. Under Koen’s guidance, the company has sharpened internal structures, strategy, and company culture, while reinforcing its purpose and long-term vision.

“We’ve set two ultimate goals,” explains Koen Evers: “Within ten years, we aim to be a top-10 global player in mobile robotics, with one million robots worldwide running on Avular technology. It’s ambitious, but we are convinced it’s achievable. We want to make a real impact on the world while working with the right partners.”
